In search of ALOHA
The Aloha Hostel in Paris. “Hawaiian pizza” in Macau. Hibiscus-print shirts in Guatemala. My dream project is to document the diaspora of aloha, exploring why Hawaii resonates so deeply with people all over the world.
Aloha is a Hawaiian word, but its meaning is universally understood. Why? My theory is, as Jackie DeShannon suggested, “What the world needs now is love sweet love.” People of all different cultures dream of a better place—call it paradise—where everyone lives by love. Founded on aloha, Hawaii represents that better place, even for those who have never visited or live oceans away. Ultimately, the idea is to arrange the images, a collection of diverse emblems of Hawaii, to form a composite map of the world that shows that aloha is, in fact, all around us. Think of it as a literal application of “love knows no boundaries.”
What I have learned from living in Hawaii is that paradise is a living land, a living ocean, and a loving people who give more than they receive. I came up with this project to remind me that Hawaii is not just a place—it’s a dream.

Aloha mai Catharine! This idea would work for a lot of different cultures, I think. But Hawaii is loved for its beauty, peace, and spirit. I am voting for you and wishing you luck. A hui hou.

Definitely a concept worth exploring! I often hear people comparing beaches to Hawaii, even if they've never been. It's just this idea they have in their head that Hawaii is paradise. Anyway, please visit my project and vote if you have a moment!
