Roma Emigration
The story will retrace the route of the Roma, or Gypsies as they are commonly referred, from Northern India to the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. It will document their struggles and their joys and capture their resilient spirit.
Roma Emigration
The people still commonly known as Gypsies prefer to be called by their true name – Roma. Roma are descendants of the ancient warrior classes of Northern India. It is believed the first large wave of emigration of Roma occurred in the 11th century. They spread westward from India to the Middle East, Europe and then the Americas. In their new homelands they faced constant persecution and their history is one of great suffering. Yet their spirit has endured and they continue to honor and revive their culture. Their joy and pain is passionately conveyed in their music and their dance for which they are famous. The story will retrace their migration route from India westward and document their lives in their new homelands and capture the cultural essence of these resilient people.
