It's Not Just a Rock

In Jordan, in the middle of the desert, is a city...yes a city that has long since been abandoned. My dream assignment would be to photograph every magnificent facet and share the images with the world in several media forms.

The city is called Petra (Greek for "the rock") and it is entirely carved into the side of the rose-colored sandstone cliffs. It is mentioned in the Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Egytian Armana Letters. It was used in the "Left Behind" book series and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." According to Arab tradition, Petra is the place where Moses struck his staff on a rock and water came out of it. It's also where Moses' brother, Aaron is buried.

In 1985 Petra was designated a World Heritage Site and in 2007 was named a New Seven Wonder of the World. It changes constantly since only 1/20th of the city has been unearthed, by Jordanian, French, Swiss and American archaeologists. It's because of these new finds and the vast deteriation of the city due to the elements and visitors.

By photographing this little-known and mysterious stone city, I can help preserve it for generations to come.
