WHALES OF TONGA CONSERVATION PROJECT
I will travel to Tonga to swim with and document majestic Humpback Whales.Through the use of both classic and underwater photography my goal is to exhibit the importance of protecting these ancient mariners from illegal whaling.
ABOUT WHALING: Many people think commercial hunting of whales ended in the 1980s. Sadly, this is not the case! More than 30,000 whales have been brutally killed since the 1986 commercial whaling ban.
ABOUT HUMPBACKS: There are only about 6,000 humpback whales left in the oceans today. Every year, the Southern Humpback Whale migrates to Tonga from Antartica, a journey of 6000 miles. From the month of July through to November the whales can been seen and heard frollocking.
ABOUT TONGA: Tonga, a reformed whaling nation, is one of only 3 locations in the world where one can snorkel with magnificent humpback whales and is currently on the verge of becoming a recognized international whale sanctuary.
ABOUT ME: I have been actively involved in the Whale Conservation Movement and would like to take this opportunity to further contribute by exemplifying Tonga, it's people, and culture as a model of sustainability for the rest of the world.
