Circumnavigate the Mediterranean Sea
I plan on circumventing the Mediterranean Sea and documenting the wide array of cultures that occupy a relatively small portion of the world
Back in 1992 when I was in 8th grade I had a geography teacher, Mr. Cox, who gave us a group project of picking one country on which to give a presentation. Matt Raney and I picked Morocco, and since that day I have had a feeling deep inside me that I needed to visit this intriguing land. After that school year I was lucky enough to travel through Europe for a couple of weeks and experienced a world that was so different from what I knew in the US, but so very similar on many levels.
The draw of this area has tugged at me more and more as the years have gone by. In the spring of 2006 I spoke with my father shortly before his death, and he asked me what I planned to do with myself after I graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado. My answer was simple. "I'm going to walk the Earth", I replied. To which he said "Andy, you need to get a job"...."What if I turn it into a book?" He responded with a simple "Ok". This is a goal I plan on working my way toward -- regardless of whether or not I win this contest -- not only for myself, but for him.
If it weren't for my dad, I absolutely would not be where I am today. His love for photography is what has driven me, and it is from him that I gained my talent. He supplied me with the best education and best equipment that he could and wanted nothing in return but for me to achieve my dreams.
The area surrounding the Mediterranean is drenched with culture that differs from anywhere else on this planet. From the multiple cultures of Spain, across the southern border of Europe through France, Italy and Greece and back around into Africa from Egypt to Libya and Morocco. I challenge anyone to find a smaller area with the diversity that makes up the Mediterranean coast.
These are the reasons why I have always wanted to pursue a trip to all of these countries that are so foreign, not only to me, but to a vast majority of the Earth. I want to play my part in bringing us all together; to celebrate our differences, but to thrive in our similarities.
