Rock and Roll America
What does it mean to be in a rock band? Please vote to help me to merge two of my greatest passions: music and photography. I am an art student at Northern Kentucky University and the singer/songwriter of an independent Cincinnati-based band, July For Kings. I would like to document a month long cross-country tour with one of my band-mates focused on brotherhood, music, and a reverence for the glorious tradition of rock and roll music in America. I would shoot not only the excitement and energy of being on stage, but the quiet moments before and after shows. I will shoot the open road, the colorful people and towns along the way, the smoky night clubs and bars, the excitement of seeing new places, the impact of music on fan, and the passion of performing. We will stop at historic rock-and-roll locations including Graceland in Memphis, The Chelsea Hotel in New York, and Jimmy Hendrix's grave-site in Washington State, to name a few. We will play at some of the most famous clubs in the USA from the Whiskey A-Go-Go in Los Angeles to the Stone Pony in New Jersey. And I will make hundreds of beautiful pictures with my Nikon digital camera along the way.
Through years of music industry ups and downs my drummer Dan and I have toiled playing bars in Cincinnati and nearby cities. We have built and maintained a small following of extremely dedicated fans in the mid-west, but rarely get to do shows out of town, and have never been on a cross-country tour. We have a record coming out independently that we have been working on for two years between work and school, but with no label and no tour support, we can't afford to take the time off to promote it. Good ideas like yours that are not in the Top 100 are nearly impossible to find. This is unfair as many great ideas are hidden. I've been a fan of July For Kings/Joe Hedges for about two years now, and would love to see these guys come out to Jersey and be heard all around the country. If you don't win, I'm going to drive out there to Ohio (1000 miles?) when you have a couple shows. That's how good the music is people!
