Vanishing Resources: Earth's Moment of Truth
Photographing the most critical issues today: the misuse and overuse of our natural resources, specifically deforestation, fresh water supplies, waste management and non-renewable fuel dependency, would be my dream assignment.
My vision stems from a lifelong desire to have a positive impact on the effect of worldwide deforestation and non-renewable fuel dependency. These events continue to affect climate change.
Photography has become an essential tool for documentation of conservation actions, including the challenges/obstacles as well as the successes. Those images are especially important for people who have never traveled, or cannot travel to a wilderness area or see first hand the devastation of a site under siege of human encroachment and development. Images can serve as the catalyst to motivate the general public to change their consumption habits. Thus we encourage them to take action to support conservation and sustainable development locally and abroad.
My goal is to provide a visual journey that evokes an emotional response within the viewer. This is a photographic essay and journalistic account of the successes and failures in many of the known worldwide hotspots as well as issues in our own “back yard”. We will celebrate the successes of responsible actions and increase our awareness of the exploitation of people and resources. This will encourage the preservation of natural wealth, endemic species and biodiversity of these regions for future generations.
By creating a connection between what the Earth can provide and what we are consuming at ever-increasing rates, I hope to demonstrate the value of and the concern for the depletion of its resources. This is why becoming better stewards of the Earth’s finite resources is so important.
Potential hot spots include Borneo, Florida Everglades, Madagascar, Congo, Atlantic Forests of Brazil, SW Australia, MesoAmerica, Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany (site of the largest estuary in Africa). These are just some of the possible areas for the assignment. Photographs can be printed and displayed much more readily than many other kinds of media, providing a greater visual and emotional impact.

Marc: Love your dream and looking forward to seeing your images as they document habitat exploitation and conservation.
You got my vote Marc. Best wishes!
Great idea Marc, People have taken pretty lousy care of the planet they have been entrusted with, mostly from ignorance I think. Projects such as this would help raise awareness of our impact. Good luck!
Got my vote - my power to you. I hope you get it. I am a huge fan of your work.

Good stuff, Marc....best of luck to you.
I think you have chosen a topic that is temporarily lost in the glare of economic turmoil. Eventually, it will be the topic as its impacts eclipse all other threats to our home planet. I hope the sponsors of this competition are open to the future -- now. Best of luck Marc!
Good Luck Marc. JIMBO

This sounds like a wonderful idea. This is a winner! Renee
This is a worthy project. I am just starting a family and it makes me sad to think that much of the beauty in the natural environment that I remember from my childhood is no longer there and the beauty I have seen as an adult seems to be swiftly vanishing.
Great idea, Marc. We all need to be made more aware of this topic. Best luck! Robin
You certainly have the eye and the skills to pull this off. Most of the photos on your web site are beautiful in one way or another. This assignment will be a change for you for much of what you will find will not be beautiful!

Your idea should be in the #1 spot over all the others! your project has the capability of changing people's minds about the effects of global warming and the real possibility that Life as we know it might disappear! Good Luck, Marc!
